A city born from the Indian Ocean

During the development of Still Here, in the total second coronavirus lockdown, we tried to force the formats of the public presentation, to maintain the centrality of the places, dear to us, where the meetings in presence should have been held.
From this experience, it was born this installation out of format.

Concept

Di fronte a Colombo, nel cuore della Nuova Via della Seta, una compagnia cinese sta costruendo Port City, una futuristica città pop up che sorgerà su un'isola artificiale di sabbia rubata all'Oceano Indiano.
Un'estensione di Colombo che con l'ambizione di diventare un hub dell'Asia del Sud vende il proprio brand attraverso concetti quali World class city, sustainable city design, smart city, livable city.
Skyline scintillanti, grattacieli di vetro, centri commerciali, infrastrutture ultramoderne sono i miraggi che prendono forma nei rendering della città dove le persone reali con i propri sogni e i propri corpi sono cancellati per fare spazio a freddi ologrammi.
La videoinstallazione ideata da Suranga Katugampala e Jasmine Khan, realizzata tra Milano e Colombo, propone una visionaria contro narrazione dando vita, in un gioco di proiezioni, ad un “antirendering” di una città che ancora non esiste. Sullo scheletro di un'immaginaria Nuova Via della Seta, concepita come una grande tenaglia di curve marittime e terrestri sulla quale viaggiano ossessivamente merci e persone, i corpi prendono lentamente il sopravvento ridando voce al desiderio .

In front of Colombo, in the heart of the New Silk Road, a Chinese company is building the Port City, a futuristic pop-up city that will rise on an artificial island of sand stolen from the Indian Ocean.
An extension of Colombo that with the ambition of becoming a hub of South Asia sells its brand through concepts such as World class city, sustainable city design, smart city and livable city.
Sparkling skylines, glass skyscrapers, shopping malls, ultramodern infrastructures are the mirages that take shape in the renderings of the city where real people with their dreams and their bodies are erased to make room for cold holograms. The video installation conceived by Suranga Katugampala and Jasmine Khan, created between Milan and Colombo, proposes a visionary counter-narrative, giving life, in a game of projections, to an “anti-rendering” of a city that does not yet exist.

ඉන්දීය මහා සයුරේ වැලි සම්පත කොල්ල කමින්, එ සයුර මත ම හිස ඔසවන, ‘තීර්ථ නගරය’ නම් කුඩා ‘අනාගතවාදී’ කෘත්‍රීම දූපත, චීන සමාගමක් විසින්, ඉපැරණි සේද මාවතේ හදවත බඳු කොළඹ නගරය අබියස, (මේ වන විටත්) ගොඩනැංවෙනු ලබමින් තිබේ.
‘විශ්වීය නගරයක්’, ‘තිරසාර නගර නිර්මිතයක්’, ‘දැකුම්කලු ගාම්භීර නරගයක්’, ‘ජීවිතය විඳින්නට වටින නගරයක්’ බඳු ආකර්ෂණීය (වෙළෙඳ) ප්‍රචාරණ සංකල්ප හරහා ‘තීර්ථ නගරය’ ඔසවා තැබීමේ අභිලාෂය වන්නේ විස්තාරිත කොළඹ නගරය, දකුණු ආසියාවේ කේන්ද්‍රස්ථානය පත්කීරීමයි.
සුරංග කටුගම්පල සහ ජැස්මින් ඛාන් විසින් පරිකල්පිත, ඉතාලියේ මිලානෝ නගරයේ සිට ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ කොළඹ දක්වා නිරූපනය කෙරෙන මෙම ‘’වීඩියෝ ස්ථාපන කලා කෘතිය’’ තුළ වන ප්‍රක්ෂේපන ක්‍රීඩනය තුළින් මතුකෙරෙන තවමත් යථාර්ථයක්ව නො පවතින නගරක් පිළිබඳ ‘ප්‍රති-ප්‍රවාචනයක්’ (anti-rendering) උදෙසා අනාගතවාදී (දුරදක්නාසුළු) විකල්පවූත් අර්ථාන්විත වූත් පණිවිඩයක් වෙත සහෘදයා කැඳවනු ලබයි.
ඉදින්, පාරිකල්පිත ‘නවසේද මාවත’ නම් (ඇටසැකිල්ල) සැකිල්ල මත, දැලක්වන්ව එළන ලද ජනතාව සහ බඩුභාණ්ඩ චනය වන්නාවූ රැලි නැගෙන සාගරය සහ වංගු සහිත ගොඩබිම ඇතුළත් ‘විභාවිත’ (conceived) භූමි දර්ශනය තුළ මානව අධ්‍යාත්මයේ සහ මානව ශරීරයේ ආශාව (සහ ප්‍රමෝධය) නව මානයකින් විකසිත වෙමින් තිබේ.
